In Mafraq we are preparing for the resumption of face-to-face consultations in our mental health project but will continue remote consultations for patients who are not able or willing to come. In Rann, MSF continues to provide community-based health promotion services and will start round-trip visits for medical consultations. We have provided training and preparedness measures in Al Hassakeh National Hospital and Al Hol camp, including creating a 48-bed isolation ward, introducing surveillance measures, case identification and management, and patient flow and triage processes, along with IPC and training on PPE.

MSF staff have assisted with limiting infection spread through contact tracing (physical and telephonic), the development and dissemination of health promotion materials, and by implementing various strategies for decongesting health care facilities. Preparedness may include a range of activities, such as how we reorganize triage and waiting areas; strengthen infection prevention and control (IPC) measures; and provide technical advice and training on IPC to other health workers and national ministries of health staff.
And yet, about 30% of the population in the Navajo Nation doesn’t have running water where they live. In human terms, the toll of the disease is almost unfathomable: COVID-19 has killed more than 1 million people in the nine months since it was first reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). Staff have established IPC measures at all work sites. MSF also runs a mobile COVID-19 unit that supports other facilities and works on early detection and prevention of the spread of the disease.
