A few of the first things I did was to have my warrior auto attack the strongest enemy, healer auto heal anyone under 20% life, Mages auto replenish mana, and everyone drink health potion at 10% life in case the healer was on cooldown. You need to do as good a job as possible managing enemies, keeping them stunned, or frozen, and targeting down 1 at a time. The reason is that it feels like I have little control over my party's actions. I've tried to get into The Witcher, but I find it really alienating now to play an RPG-type game that doesn't let you choose your character and romance. Definitely the best in the series and while I also really liked Witcher 3 and other games, I don't go back to them as much as I do with DA:O. I have played it soooo many times, still I somehow manage to create a new adventure with different combinations. I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. ... that is completely NOT what I thought the game was. Cast a spell at a target, as soon as it casts, pause, assess the situation, choose what the mage needs to do next. It is in a different league altogether. It also sounds like you might have foregone the 'tactics' screen thus far. there are many waves of enemies in the courtyard. Which sucks, because I would really like to play more than just that one origin. I agree it was kinda weird to try walking through the swamp only to run into an invisible wall. I've been playing games my whole life and I can easily say that Dragon Age Origins is the best title I've ever had the honor of playing. Downloading from steam now. DA:O combat is extremely tactical and strategic. And for some reason, winning fights in this game gives me a lot of satisfaction. It's easy to lose track of how much damage has been done, and you may end up with multiple enemies sitting at 30%hp lost in a crowd of fresh enemies. Fighters and archers can probably just be assigned someone to attack, but may need to use some special abilities and manually change targets here and there. I would sometimes use Storm of the Century and whatever the huge AoE stun was to end encounters before they began. You can do that. I'm still getting rekt in the courtyard due to enemies spawning on top of the stairs and below so I don't know how I should use my abilities effectively. I was just like "oh, neat". Hawke and the Inquisitor are characters I love, and I really enjoy making unique Inquisitors and Hawkes, but I was never in my character’s shoes more than with my first Warden.
Check out Tyranny. The most advanced one I have played is Divinity. From there, you can refine your tactics as more needs arise. I have been contemplating for the past few weeks now to get an Xbox One, buy the entire dragon age series from Origins to Inquisition. Yeah. I then started to strategically switching between companions pretty regularly...I actually mostly stopped playing my actual main character as I had his brute force warrior skills pretty locked down with tactics and didn't need to micro manage him.
My main is a rogue, which is a good character for stuns and other debuffs as well as high DPS. If you use the default scripts though you're going to have a bad time. I saw that you could set combat tactics and knew I could switch between companions and such, but it all seemed like a waste of time. Any pointers going in for the first time?
I have been playing for a few hours and really the game reminds me of KOTOR. :). So, I would definitely recommend burying yourself into the tactics system. IMO Dragon Age Origins does not require you to 'git gud', which is a lot of the reason I like it.
Are you just letting the AI control your allies or are you regularly switching between allies to command them? I'm not sure why you're being downvoted.
