Thiefs backstab they don't fight in the open and it's normal to miss at low levels even for fighters. Use ranged combat with oil of speed and kite enemies to death. But ultimately, since Thieves have shitty THAC0, terrible APR, bad HP, and no weapon specialization, they can only really do hit-and-runs from stealth or invisibility for most of the game.
Oil of speed lasts for 1 hour - that is much longer than a haste spell. In terms of other thief classes, it's by far the lowest damage potential and it is purely a utility kit. f/t can hit the highest non-contingency/trigger dps (and highest sustainable dps) in the game, m/t can do the cool thiefy things at a much lower level than usual, c/t can impress your friends because they didn't know that combo existed (and cleric self buffs plus the staff of ram +6 makes for some surprisingly fun times).
