IMDb always reminded of the pride our great gran used to take in her telehphonic notes, her leather-bound contacts list and her answering the phone of "good afternoon, youre through to 615288, household Findlay" when she'd answer the phone, asthough the sheer status of her landline was enough to merit such regal vigour in her "hello's". These are brief stories of people obsessed with phone calls or for whom the phone has a powerful meaning. In this wonderful short, shots of British phone booths, the sound of a ringing phone, are followed by typed or hand-written pages, always marked with corrections/variations, and a voice over reads them, even when we the viewers can't decipher them because of the stains on the page or the numerous unclear corrections.
He does it well here. I suppose a 45 minute short from Greenaway is a bit imposing, as he is a cerebral director. Public telephones are positioned all around England and they stand as little monuments. These are some…. Oddly comforting, in a way. good story fragments.

Feels like a proof of concept for 'The Falls'. Peter Greenaway dryly rattles off some humorous stories involving phone obsession over images of the stories, phone booths and with traffic noise.
I slightly preferred Windows, but I think the speed with which the stories were rattled off, the extent to which there was crossover between stories and the quality of the audio/thickness of Greenaway's accent make this one I'm sure will only improve upon re-watch. Report this film, A little more rooted in its structural gimmick (phone booths and imaginary lives) than some of the other Greenaway shorts I've watched for me to enjoy its whimsy as much, but it still feels enjoyably like the cinematic equivalent of a Boards of Canada track--a sun-faded recollection of a world you remember from your youth, but that never existed, while working as a fetishistic reminder of the power of a) handwritten letters and b) phone booths, (Which, given that nobody uses phone booths anymore, makes me wonder how 21st century babies would view this short as compared to my reaction).
