Why are these two so specially overpowered when compared to a Fighter/Mage or Fighter/Cleric? I also remember that I thought Champions of Krynn was ridiculously easy, and recently I tried playing that again and thought it was a bit tedious). So I played the Gold Box Games excessively when they came out (I was 12 when Pool came out).
You definitely want to have a good mix of a team and sadly thieves tend to fall off.
I guess I'll just have to stick to human characters.
MS-DOS users had to restart or enter a training hall and remove all their characters from the party to load a game. (although, maybe I was just a bit more patient back then.

There is a bonus challenge that you sort of need one of each class though (Forgot if you can dual class you way out of that one).
A maximum of six characters may be added to the party and it's highly recommended to use all six spaces as the game does not give any handicaps for smaller parties. You definitely want to have a good mix of a team and sadly thieves tend to fall off.
Can't answer the detailed question, since I never made it past Curse, but I will suggest you check out Gold Box Companion, since it lets you do stuff with the engine you wouldn't otherwise be able to do (e.g., eliminate level caps for multiclassed characters, so that you don't screw yourself by playing Pools of Darkness with characters from Pool of Radiance that can't go past, like, level 5).

Inside the Vessel is a Pool of Darkness, which the party should take to Elminster. The gameplay basics are identical to all games in the series.
In my memory, I blasted through the first three games back in the day with my fairly standard party of one mage, one cleric, one thief, a couple of fighters in Pool, to be replaced with a fighter, a ranger, and a paladin in Curse (? My party killed the vampires and buried the family.

The ranger/mage combo is extremely overpowered and I believe that cleric/paladin duel class is also an option. The cities and towns of the region (with the exception of the evil cities of Zhentil Keep and Mulmaster) are ripped from the earth, leaving only craters.

However, by taking advantage of the Add/Remove character feature, it is possible to clone characters and have very powerful characters by the end of Pools of Darkness.
