The further he goes off philosophising about far flung futures, the more disconnected I get. As much as I admire the originality of the story regarding the Fermi paradox (Neanderthals in space - why not! Don't really want to pick up and read the third one of this series.
I liked it, this grim yet inspiring story of life, the universe and everyting.
But when Nemoto, a Japanese researcher on the Moon, discovers evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence in the solar system, the same paradox provokes both Malenfant and Nemoto to question why now? Welcome back. Not that.

Baxter's second book in the loose 'Manifold series', Manifold: Space, answers the Fermi paradox by suggesting that there is life, lots of it, in the galaxy, but due to relatively frequent galactic destructive events, we are all young, reaching out, expanding and clashing at the same time. Save for the almost scientifically sound means of cultural spread across the universe, I cannot recommend. This is a great science fiction novel full of interesting ideas. That the novel covers far more territory, both in time and distance, than any one person could ever absorb is both a strength and a weakness; suspense is difficult to maintain over the course of centuries. Curious but aloof, incomprehensible, the Gaijin seem unhappy with what they find here and set about recreating from existing DNA some of the marvels of prehistory, including those hominids driven to extinction by man. Very much enjoyed this book. I believe that the reason for this is that an Epic, for it to reach the level of the sublime, it must overwhelm our imaginations.
