I really want to do this book justice with a fantastic review, and I don't know if that's possible. This ia an excellent survey of the science AND the ethics of current work in neuroscience.....it is that second part that is typically missing from discussion like this - and it is that second part that will scare the daylights out of you - or should.
Should be required reading in all colleges first year - psych, philosophy, anthropology, sociology - transcends them all and continues on. Thomas Metzinger is one of those rare philosophers who take neuro-science and cognitive science and the implications coming from the extensive research on the brain and consciousness seriously. he shouldn't be allowed to pass this clap-trap off as legitimate scientific process without rigorous examinations by professionals. The fundamentals of what we are are the subject of this exciting read. We’d love your help. even though (some) current (legitimate) brain research fueled some of his "supportive" details, most of his chapters were developed off of a truly imaginative world based upon a matrix of air and shadow. Not as technical as the "quest for consciousness" by Christof Koch but certainly more technical than the likes of Daniel Dennett. Metzinger does a nice job of asking the right questions and creating a context within which to consider them even though he doesn't offer any concrete solutions.
