zealot: the life and times of jesus of nazareth review
Makes you ask a lot of questions about the Christian faith and it's origin. He, too, purports to be an intrepid archaeologist for historical truth, excavating the “real” Jesus out of the “propagandistic legend” that has grown up around him.
Socrates was tetchy by comparison. I did not even know until now that James was Jesus' brother and the true leader of the early Jesus movement after crucifixion. But his rebellion fails. I was only interested in the Roman military perspective and got what I could out of the book.
To survive it must also find inspiration in a good 'story' . 4,606 global ratings | 4,176 global reviews, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2019.
Nevertheless, I found his a fascinating, well written book which also provides a lot of detail about the historical environment of the times and the evolution of the early Christian church. Rather, he sifts them, making the story less important than the detail. The idea that they are a wholly new form of literature might, in itself, be reason enough for us to read them more subtly. His description of the wood manages to ignore the tree. Fast, FREE delivery, video streaming, music, and much more.
One would think that any historical reconstruction of the life of Jesus would have to deal, at least briefly, with the apostles' conviction that Jesus had returned from the dead. The detailed account in particular of the historical, political and social context of His time help understand the role and importance of religion not only in Jesus' world but in modern times as well.
Very interesting study that should give the reader some new insights into our Christian beliefs. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. There is nothing about his early development that can be verified in the Bible or elsewhere, however when old enough he works in Sepphoris, a nearby town, as a labourer. Even the cleansing of the Temple stops short of death. The author details the historical life of Jesus and compares it to the biblical version. This book, together with "Jesus, Interrupted" by Bart Ehrman are essential reading for anyone who has a need for a religious history grounded ni fact rather than fiction and distortion. Online and in-store stock may differ. Very thought provoking about the Christian church. Aslan requires Paul to be cleverer and stupider at the same time.

The Jesus in this book was just one of dozens of Holy men and political activists against the Roman occupation of the Holy Land and had he not died on the cross he would have died resisting the occupation and the puppet Jewish hierarchy that kowtowed to it. That he frequently invokes the Q hypothesis – the idea that behind the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke lurks an incontrovertible true document – shows just how out of touch with theology he is. I read a lot. Disabling it will result in some disabled or missing features.

I think this is a fact that many Christians today forget. In “Zealot,” Reza Aslan blurs this distinction, depicting Jesus as a “politically conscious Jewish revolutionary” whose kingdom is decidedly of this world.
However, books from those historians were not available... so Zealot it was! I like what I hope was an unbiased examination of the existing historic evidence. If it was fully supported by historic evidence, it would require no faith. This may be the most illuminating books I have ever read. In the end, “Zealot” offers readers not the historical Jesus but a Jesus for our place and time — an American Jesus for the 21st century, and more specifically for a post-Sept. 11 society struggling to make sense of Christianity’s ongoing rivalry with Islam. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. The section on Paul and his letters was the most eye opening because I've always had an issue with Paul trying to sound more than Jesus in his letters.
And why no battle plan? ZEALOT.........Heavy going, which you would expect with anything to do with Judaism. What are we to make of Jesus’s apparent lack of interest in doing anything practical whatsoever to prepare for holy war? Can't get enough of that textual criticism and early Christian history.
I was not at all familiar with the history of this time and that alone changed my perspective of the bible, without even discussing Jesus.
In “Zealot,” Aslan gives us a Jesus who fights back, and not in the manner of Gandhi. But he, too, remakes Jesus in his own image. If you have, you might get a bit annoyed about a few things, such as (a) insufficient justification for Aslan dismissing the "messianic secret" of the Gospel of Mark, or rather relating it back to the historical Jesus rather than to the clear motives existing in the early Church; (b) calling it "Zealot" and then telling you the Zealots did not exist as a party until thirty years after the crucifixion, and not really addressing the psychology/culture of the need to disguise/"rename" (at the time of writing the earliest gospel) the disciple known as The Zealot. When he requires Celsus, the vehement antagonist of Christianity, to be true, he takes his work as such (without ever mentioning we only have Celsus in fragments preserved in Origen's rebuttal); when he wishes it otherwise, Celsus is "so clearly polemical he cannot be taken seriously". Scholars and believers alike tend to contrast sharply the founders of Christianity and Islam: Jesus the apolitical man of peace who turns the other cheek; and Muhammad the politician, jurist and general who takes much of the Arabian Peninsula by force. Throughout “Zealot,” he refers to selected New Testament passages as “preposterous,” “fanciful,” “patently fictitious” and “obviously contrived.” But Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are not the only ones spinning Jesuses out of fertile imaginations. . In fiction, Naomi Alderman's The Liars' Gospel deals with many of the same ideas with both scepticism and sensitivity, while Richard Beard's Lazarus is Dead is far more imaginative in its analysis of the Jesus stories. Just brilliant as it describes the messianic centuries of the post-Christ ... Just brilliant as it describes the messianic centuries of the post-Christ era excellently.
Even Mark's Gospel includes sly interventions: when Pilate asks the crowd if they want Barrabas or Jesus, the earliest readers would have found the pun. . But these are niggles compared with the major flaw in this work. Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher from Galilee launched a revolutionary movement proclaiming the "Kingdom of God", and threatened the established …
Nope, I don't care. If, as Aslan contends, the gospels are both infected with Pauline theology and a source for the aboriginal Jesus cult, then how can he tell when they are wrong and when they are right? Presents a great take on the real history behind the time Jesus was born and the environment in which he lived. In Aslan’s telling, these two scenes introduce a “revolutionary zealot who walked across the Galilee gathering an army of disciples” to rain “God’s wrath . Believe it or not -- It comes down to Faith. I was interested in reading a book about the historical Jesus and this one popped up.
