Nothing strange or crazy in this movie just a nice story.
But, again, the filmmakers evince restraint: They refuse to tell us everything about the troubled past shared by father and son, thereby enhancing the story’s universality.

It was slow to start. The Etruscan Smile follows a familiar arc -- albeit one deepened by the always reliable Brian Cox in the story's central role. He had to learn Gaelic to play the part, and as far as I can see did a fantastic job.
What??? 'Succession' star Brian Cox delivers a rich and winning performance in charming human dramedy.
(“Travelling North,” the 1987 Australian drama directed by Carl Schultz and starring Leo McKern, is just one of the obvious predecessors.)

The combination of humor and more emotional scenes was honestly breathtaking. Regal I cried at the end and my tears were tears of joy and sorrow. Brian Cox as a gruff but vulnerable (and dying) Scotsman elevates this beautifully photographed and quietly touching film, with a talented supporting cast. But adds nothing new to the genre, but well made all round. The Etruscan Smile isn't a groundbreaking film, but it's a compelling character study of how one man deals with a terminal illness and how he tries to right some of the wrongs in his life.

Cox, a brilliantly versatile actor whose lengthy résumé includes everything from the original Hannibal Lecter in “Manhunter” to the soft-hearted hardcase of a bar owner in “The Good Heart,” has recently become something of a household name thanks to his mesmerizing portrayal of aging but unbowed media mogul Logan Roy on HBO’s “Succession.” The elevation of his profile due to that show is likely the main reason why “The Etruscan Smile” has finally gotten a U.S. release after a lengthy period of festival-hopping and overseas exhibition. I totally enjoyed this. |, April 3, 2020 | Rating: 3/5 Arthur Cohn Productions, Coming Soon. One scene in this movie is in a museum and an ancient Etruscan sculpture has the two people smiling.
Brian Cox rages robustly and arrestingly against the dying of the light in “The Etruscan Smile,” an unabashedly formulaic yet undeniably affecting coming-to-terms drama that may cause as much discomfort as delight for those who recognize bits and pieces of their own fathers (or themselves) in the cantankerous character Cox portrays so persuasively.
A lovely story with great actors.
Suddenly Rory falls to the floor with disabling pain. Just a nitpick. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service.
