Not because of the mathematical complexity (he helpfully banishes the complex equations to the Appendices to avoid confusing laymen such as myself) but because the ideas that he expresses in this book are so fundamentally non-intuitive. I pretty much skipped the math (couldn't understand most of it anyway) and went right to the brilliantly concise and simple little summaries that Penrose always seems to be able to abstract from that awesomely complex mind of his.
