A good majority of children will find much to enjoy here and parents will no doubt appreciate the film's positive message, inspiring characters, and genuinely good heart. Not so much his grandfather (David Morse, who was a demanding parent to Jim), but certainly his lovable Uncle Bob and Aunt Mel (M. Emmet Walsh and Lois Smith). This film is sentimental and artlessly sinister: like a cross between Mary Shelley and John Irving, with a dash of the equally unendurable Benjamin Button movie. A gooey mess, but not an entirely dislikable one. From director and writer Peter Hedges comes a wonderful tale about the power of intention, being careful of what you wish for, self-acceptance, love, loss, and new beginnings.
