A strong start - you feel you really are in an experimental physics lab. The author does have very strong opinions it would seem about what is and isn't science fiction - there's a strange digression disparaging the Martian Chronicles and Neuromancer for poor science, but praising Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun trolley for not being fantasy.

It is well written, the plot is interesting, intriguing and flows superbly from page to page. It is amazing to see how much science and technology has changed in 25 years.

It was reprinted by Avon Books in 1997 with slight revisions. The novel was first published in hardcover by William Morrow in 1989, then in mass market paperback by Avon Books in 1991. In addition to as well-put-together story that has a lot of hard science in it, they have hackers using Macintosh computers and 14K baud modems, laptops called "Portable Power PC" and other wacky stuff. The book has dated badly (explanations of what email and bit net are no longer necessary). Wow! I've had this on my TBR shelf for years, and finally got to it.
There is real scientific extrapolation in it as well as a plausible representation of university politics. Some seek to exploit this for private gain, others want to share it with the world, and in the middle of this, some people are accidentally tra.
