The plot was good enough to hold me enthralled right to the end. i can only imagine cameron was interested in working under water. Far from reality-show caricatures, this is true documentary filmmaking that brings viewers into authentic and visceral experience of weekly therapy with four couples. Josh has a bitter relationship with his father and Carl is the sponsor of the expedition. To me not in any sense (ha ha, yes the movie is 3D, lousy pun intended). A gripping expedition becomes a race against time and human nature, when a group of explorers navigating an immense cave in Papua New Guinea during a cyclone find themselves trapped in what threatens to become a watery tomb. Its members are invited to black tie masquerades, private dinner parties, and erotic theater which is considered art. In fact, at first glance it's hard to see why Mr Avatar would want to attach his name to a shambles such as this. I really don't know much about photography, directors, producers (or even many of the actors) so I always just base my reviews on whether or not I was entertained by the film and this time - three cheers! There are no monsters, weird creatures, on humanoid inhabitants, such as are found in the recent films, The Cave, The Cavern, and Descent (Parts 1 and 2). I don't like doing it, but with this stinker, I had no choice. The question hits home as relationships come to a crossroads at the monthly Masquerade. Do what Frank says or die. Very Average to say the least, however the 3D was worth while and effective (most of the time). The last is said with an Australian accent - we don't use that term! Along with his son "Josh" (the handsome, but stiff, Rhys Wakefield) who cares not a jot about caves, and with whom he has a strained relationship; and a truly wooden Ioan Griffudd as "Carl" the team descend... Not long after, and following some truly amazing photography of their subterranean environment, a tropical storm does some descending of it's own and soon the network of tunnels and caves are flooded and our explorers face a very perilous journey to get back to the surface. I detest putting anything made in Australia 'down', but save your money folks - this one's a dud. The acting is not amazing, and the dialogue was a little sub-par, but this was made up for with the technical realism of the SCUBA diving and the breath-taking (pun intended) scenery. This docuseries goes inside SNCTM and shows you what some consider taboo but what secretly most people desire and how living 2 lives comes at a price. Tell you something - this looks astonishing. Gruffudds character rapidly deteriorates from charming daredevil to crazed selfish psychopath which is boring and predictable. But this one was very well done. Playing out like The Descent with more water and no monsters, it's a beautifully shot survival flick but it's populated with characters so bland that you won't care one bit if they survive or not. I was expecting this film to be a lot worse but it was supported by my JC - James Cameron as executive producer and it does have some of the best 3D visuals out there. Was this review helpful to you? The teenager Josh McGuire (Rhys Wakefield) welcomes his friend Carl (Ioan Gruffudd) and his girlfriend Victoria (Alice Parkinson) in Papua, New Guinea, and they immediately fly to the Esa-ala Caves where Josh's father Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) is heading a cave diving expedition. They could have build a bit more on their relations between each other. Enter the world of Damon Lawner creator of SNCTM. This movie scared the hell out of me. Sex educators Sunny Megatron and Ken educate the public. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. It was exciting - The cave scenes gave a claustrophobic feel to it and a couple of times I felt quite panicky myself! SNCTM is not only an exclusive club, it's an experience where you can live out your wildest fantasies and feel free to explore your true sexual self. It is not a documentary, but designed to be a realistic, albeit embellished, account that includes non-stop action as the team is faced with its deadly situations and decisions. Wight also produced the film, with James Cameron as executive producer.
It is now a survival movie, and though the scenario plays it's part in creating loads of suspense and danger, the characterisations are weak. The complete lack of character exploration, as well as some absolutely horrendous acting and a 'plot' leaving the viewer feeling they came in one hour late (no, I didn't), all contribute to it's awfulness.
It has beautiful 3D camera work, and Rhys Wakefield and Richard Roxburgh are definitely the two bright spots.
The script hovers around B-movie level; the characters are fairly one dimensional. Alright, I'll admit that Ioan Gruffud has done much better, same with Richard Roxburgh (one of my all-time favorites, and probably the best in the film). The opening scenes gave you a sense of what it is really like to be a cave diver. To sum up, here's a film that I watched from start to finish and I enjoyed every bit of it. It keeps you nearly holding your breath and clutching your seat for the full ride. The characters do lack some depth and I wish they would have stayed true to the real story, however the effects were amazing as was the cinematography. Choose an adventure below and discover your next favorite movie or TV show. It played with some of those ideas, but did veered into another direction with them. I loved it..
